Sailing Schedule & Car Shipping Duration to Sabah 2026

When do the ships depart? How long is the journey? Find out the latest sailing schedule and car shipping duration to Sabah & Sarawak for 2026.

Planning to ship a car to Sabah but confused about the sailing schedule and shipping duration? The most common question we receive at Hantar Kereta Trading is: "When does the vessel depart, and how long until my car arrives?" Cars are loaded at Port Klang and unloaded at the destination RoRo terminal — Sapangar Bay / Kota Kinabalu port in Sabah, and Senari Terminal, Kuching in Sarawak.

In this guide, we share the typical 2026 sailing frequency, the shipping duration by destination, tips for planning a shipment during peak season and how to track your vehicle's status. As of June 2026: the frequencies and prices below are estimates based on the current RoRo shipping schedule — actual slots and dates are confirmed by the shipping line at the time of booking, and may vary by vessel and port conditions.

1. Sailing Schedule 2026

The RoRo cargo vessels that carry vehicles from Port Klang to Sabah and Sarawak usually depart several times a week. The table below shows the typical frequency by route — not a guaranteed fixed departure day, since each shipping line sets its own vessel dates. As of June 2026:

Port Klang → Kota Kinabalu~2×/week3–4 daysFriday / Monday
Port Klang → Kuching~2×/week2–3 daysFriday / Tuesday
Port Klang → Sandakan~1×/week4–5 daysSaturday / Sunday

The frequency above shifts during public holidays, the monsoon season or port maintenance — actual vessel dates are set by the shipping line, not by us. For the latest slots, visit our sailing schedule page; the operational status of the destination terminals can be checked on the official sites of Sabah Ports Sdn. Bhd. (Sapangar Bay / KK) and the Kuching Port Authority (Senari Terminal).

2. Main Shipping Routes

All vehicle shipping from Peninsular Malaysia to East Malaysia begins at Port Klang, the main port in Selangor. From here, there are several main routes:

  • Port Klang → Kota Kinabalu (KK) — The most popular route for shipping to Sabah; vehicles are unloaded at the KK port area / Sapangar Bay operated by Sabah Ports Sdn. Bhd. The sea cost starts from RM 2,480 for a sedan (as of June 2026). See the full price list on our car shipping cost to Sabah page.
  • Port Klang → Kuching — The main route to Sarawak; vehicles are unloaded at Senari Terminal under the Kuching Port Authority, Sarawak's primary RoRo and vehicle facility. The cost starts at RM 2,150 (as of June 2026); the sailing duration is shorter because the distance is closer.
  • Port Klang → Sandakan / Tawau — For destinations on Sabah's east coast. The vessel usually calls at KK first before continuing to Sandakan or Tawau.

The shipping method used is RoRo (Roll-on Roll-off) — vehicles are driven up onto the vessel and driven down at the destination port. This is the most cost-effective method. For luxury vehicles or those requiring extra protection, the container method is also available.

4. Peak Season & Delays

Several periods throughout the year see increased demand for vehicle shipping, causing vessel slots to fill up faster and waiting times to grow longer. Based on the booking patterns we observe:

  • December – January — The school holiday and new-year season. Many people relocate for work and need their vehicle shipped before starting at a new location.
  • June – July — Mid-year, coinciding with the job-transfer season, including civil servants being posted elsewhere.
  • Before Hari Raya Aidilfitri — Demand rises because many people want their car to arrive before the festive season, so popular slots are often booked far in advance.
  • Monsoon Season (Nov–Mar) — The northeast monsoon (see the official weather warnings from MET Malaysia) can cause delays of several days due to rough sea conditions, especially for routes to Sabah's east coast.

Tip: During peak season, we recommend booking at least 2–3 weeks ahead of your desired shipping date. Contact Hantar Kereta Trading to check slot availability.

5. Tracking & Status Updates

Every shipment through Hantar Kereta Trading comes with a tracking system so you always know where your car is. Here are the statuses you will see:

  1. Booking Confirmed — The vessel slot has been booked and the departure date confirmed.
  2. Car Received at the Port — The car has arrived at Port Klang and is awaiting loading.
  3. In Transit — The car has been loaded onto the vessel and is on its way to the destination.
  4. Arrived at the Destination Port — The vessel has arrived at the destination terminal (e.g. Sapangar Bay / KK port for Sabah, Senari Terminal for Kuching) and unloading is in progress.
  5. Ready for Collection — The car has passed inspection and is ready to be collected by the customer.

You can check the shipment status at any time on our tracking page. Our team will also send a WhatsApp notification each time the status changes.

6. Tips for Booking a Vessel Slot

To keep your car shipping process running smoothly, follow these tips:

  1. Book 1–2 weeks early — This ensures you get a slot on your desired date. During peak season, book even earlier.
  2. Prepare documents early — Make sure copies of the vehicle registration card (geran), IC and bank release letter (if there's a loan) are ready before the shipping day. Read the document guide in our bank release letter article.
  3. Choose a suitable departure day — Routes to KK and Kuching usually have ~2 sailings a week; we confirm the actual vessel date at booking. Plan your vehicle drop-off date 1 day before the confirmed sailing.
  4. Clear out personal belongings — Vehicles shipped via RoRo may not contain personal items. Remove everything before delivering to the port.
  5. Make sure the car is in good condition — A charged battery, tyres in good condition, and enough fuel (a quarter tank is enough). This makes the loading and unloading process easier.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose a specific day for the vessel to depart?

You can state a preferred date, and we'll match it with the nearest sailing. Routes to Kota Kinabalu and Kuching usually have about two sailings a week, but the actual day depends on the shipping line's vessel schedule — we confirm the exact date after you make a booking.

What happens if the vessel is delayed?

Delays are rare but can happen due to bad weather or port congestion. If one occurs, we'll inform you immediately via WhatsApp and update the status on the tracking page. No additional charge applies for delays not caused by the customer.

How early do I need to deliver the car to the port before the vessel departs?

The car needs to arrive at Port Klang at least 1 day before the sailing date. For example, if the vessel departs on Tuesday, the car needs to be delivered on Monday. This allows time for inspection and loading.

Can I ship a car directly to Sandakan without calling at KK?

Most vessels to Sandakan and Tawau call at Kota Kinabalu first before continuing onward. This is standard procedure and does not add to your cost. An extra 1–2 days is needed to reach Sandakan from KK.

How much does it cost to ship a car to Sabah?

Prices start from RM 2,480 (port-to-port) for a sedan. With the jockey drive cost from KL, the door-to-door total starts from RM 2,730. For a detailed cost breakdown, read our cost to ship a car to Sabah article.
