Sarawak Customs & Immigration

Sarawak Customs Clearance Process

Sarawak has its own customs and immigration authorities. Car clearance is handled by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department Sarawak branch. We handle all the documents on your behalf — this is the actual process that takes place.

01

Ship Arrives at the Sarawak Port

The RoRo/Container ship arrives at Kuching Port or Bintulu after a 4-6 day voyage. The port receives the vessel manifest and begins the documentation process.

Day 4-6
02

Submit Documents to Sarawak Customs

Our agent submits the AK90 (BL), a copy of the registration, and a copy of the IC to the Royal Malaysian Customs Sarawak branch. For Kuching: the Senari branch. For Bintulu: the Bintulu branch.

Day 5-7
03

Sarawak Customs Clearance

Sarawak Customs verifies the documents and the car's ID (chassis, engine number). The process usually takes 1-2 working days. Sarawak Immigration is not involved for the car (only for the owner if staying >90 days).

1-2 days
04

Pickup or Door-to-Door

You can collect it yourself at the port (bring your original IC), or choose jockey drive — our driver drives the car all the way to your address in Kuching, Miri, Sibu or any Sarawak destination.

Same day
Sarawak Immigration — For the Owner: If you are a Malaysian citizen and will be staying in Sarawak, you may stay up to 90 days with your IC alone. For a longer period, you need a Social Visit Pass from Sarawak Immigration (which can be applied for at a port entry point / Sarawak airport / KK Airport). THE CAR does not need this permit.

Weather & Schedule

Rainy Season & Sailing Schedule to Sarawak

The Port Klang to Sarawak route crosses the western South China Sea — more sheltered than the route to Sabah. But Sarawak itself gets a lot of rain throughout the year.

Wet Season

Sarawak Rainy Season

October – March

Sarawak receives heavy rain from the Northeast Monsoon. The ports keep operating but land delivery may be disrupted — especially mountain roads to Kapit, Mukah and village roads. Sailings from Port Klang to Kuching/Bintulu remain consistent at 4-6 days because the western South China Sea is more sheltered.

  • Heavy rain in December-January can delay land delivery
  • The Pan-Borneo Highway sometimes floods in low-lying areas
  • Sailings stay consistent — sea routes are not much affected
Ideal Time

Dry Season

April – September

The best season to ship a car to Sarawak. Consistent 4-5 day voyages, dry roads safe for long jockey drives to Miri/Limbang. The best weather to inspect and hand over the car.

  • A consistent 2-ships-a-week schedule
  • The Pan-Borneo Highway is dry — suitable for jockey drive
  • May-August is peak season for relocating
Tip: Compared to Sabah, Sarawak has less monsoon impact on sailings but MORE impact on land delivery (daily rain). Plan jockey drives after 10am (once the morning rain eases).
Sarawak vs Sabah

The Difference Between Shipping a Car to Sarawak vs Sabah

Sarawak is closer than Sabah and slightly cheaper, but there are important differences in ports, land routes, and immigration.

Preparation Checklist

Preparation Before Shipping a Car to Sarawak

In addition to the standard checklist for a 4-6 day voyage, Sarawak has extra requirements relating to immigration and interior roads.

Fuel Tank Maximum 1/4

Maritime rule — a full tank = a hazard. Drain it before shipping or the port will reject it.

Disable Alarm & Auto-Lock

A 4-6 day voyage can drain the battery if the alarm is sensitive. Disable it before drop-off.

Spare Tyre + Tools

Sarawak's interior roads (to Kapit, Mukah) are tougher. Make sure the spare tyre and tools are present.

Bring Your IC + Original Registration

Original/copy registration, IC, bank release letter. Sarawak Customs is strict — bring a hard copy of everything.

360° Car Photos

Take photos from 6 angles before drop-off. Document any existing scratches for an insurance claim.

Sarawak Immigration (if staying >90 days)

For owners who will live in Sarawak for more than 90 days — apply for a Social Visit Pass at Sarawak Immigration.

RoRo vs Container

Choose Your Sarawak Shipping Method

Two main methods to ship a car to Sarawak — compare price, protection, and suitability.

MOST POPULAR

RoRo Ship

Roll-on Roll-off

  • Most economical & affordable price
  • Ships depart every week
  • Fast procedure — suitable for standard cars
  • Cars placed on a covered deck
  • Duration: 4-7 working days
  • Personal belongings not allowed

Container

Exclusive (20ft / 40ft)

  • Maximum protection from weather & dust
  • Car locked inside a steel box
  • Personal belongings can be included
  • Suitable for luxury, vintage & modified cars
  • Duration: 5-10 working days
  • Higher price (Premium)

Door-to-Door

Carrier / Jockey Drive

  • No need to go to the port yourself
  • Picked up from home, delivered to your door
  • Ideal for busy people / out-of-area
  • Choice of Jockey (drive) or Carrier (truck)
  • Duration: +1-3 extra days from port
  • Extra cost RM200-RM900 depending on location

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Prohibited Items Inside the Car

For maritime safety, the port and customs authorities take the issue of cargo inside vehicles seriously. STRICTLY PROHIBITED to carry flammable items, weapons, drugs, or smuggled goods.

For RoRo use, any personal belongings (clothes, boxes, tools) are at the owner's own risk and marine insurance coverage does NOT cover the loss of such items.

*Only the spare tyre, jack, and basic vehicle tools are officially allowed.

Our
Sarawak Shipping Process

From the quote to your car arriving in Sarawak — we handle every step. Including Sarawak Customs paperwork and delivery to your address in Kuching, Miri, Bintulu, Sibu or any destination.

Book a Sarawak Slot

Contact our customer service officer via WhatsApp or call. Provide basic details: car model, origin location, and delivery destination. We will give free advice on the best method (RoRo or Container).

You will receive a transparent official quote. No hidden costs. This quotation covers sea freight, port charges, marine insurance (optional), and handling fees.

Once you agree on the price, we will open a booking file. Ship slots are very limited, so we recommend booking at least 2 weeks before your desired sailing date.

You need to submit copies of important documents: Owner's IC, Vehicle Registration (VOC) JPJ, and a Bank Authorisation Letter (if the vehicle is still under a loan). Documents can be sent as softcopy first.

For 'Hire Purchase' vehicles, you must obtain a release letter from your bank branch. We can provide a sample letter to ease your dealings at the bank counter.

Send your vehicle to our Yard at Port Klang (Westport/Northport). If you are busy, we provide a 'Door-to-Door' service with an additional charge to collect the car from your home.

Before entering the port area, a 'Joint Inspection' will be carried out. We will photograph the car's exterior condition, rims, mirrors, and accessories for a shared security record.

The car will be placed in a secure storage area (Holding Area) within the port while waiting for the ship to arrive. This area is tightly guarded by the port auxiliary police.

Professional port drivers (Stevedores) will drive your car into the ship's hold (RoRo) and secure the tyres (lashing) to ensure the car does not move during the voyage.

The ship departs from Port Klang heading to Borneo. The journey takes an average of 7 to 14 days depending on sea weather conditions and the ship's port-of-call schedule.

The ship arrives at the port (Kota Kinabalu/Kuching/etc). The car is driven out and placed at the destination yard. This process involves verification of port customs data.

Our agent at the destination will handle the release documents (Release Order). All destination terminal charges are settled by us (if included in the package).

You will be contacted to collect the car. Please bring your original IC and driving licence. Inspect your vehicle before signing the receipt form. Done!

Sarawak FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Shipping a Car to Sarawak

Answers to popular questions about costs, schedule, documents, and the process to Sarawak.

What is the difference between 'car shipping' and 'sending a car' to Sarawak?

There is no difference — 'car shipping to Sarawak', 'sending a car to Sarawak' and 'car cargo' all refer to the same service: transporting a vehicle from Peninsular Malaysia to Sarawak by RoRo or Container ship from Port Klang to Kuching. We handle car shipping to Kuching, Miri, Bintulu, Sibu and all of Sarawak, either port-to-port or door-to-door with full marine insurance.

How much does it cost to ship a car to Sarawak from Peninsular Malaysia?

The cost to ship a car to Sarawak starts from RM2,150 for a sedan (Port Klang to Kuching). A motorcycle is RM1,250, and a commercial vehicle / 4x4 pickup is RM2,350. For the route to Bintulu, a sedan is RM2,500. Prices are port-to-port including basic port charges.

How many days does shipping a car to Sarawak take?

Shipping to Sarawak takes 4-6 working days from Port Klang to Kuching Port. For the route to Bintulu, it takes 5-7 working days. Sarawak is closer than Sabah (~850km by sea versus 1,400km), so the voyage is faster.

Which ports are the car destinations in Sarawak?

There are TWO main ports in Sarawak: (1) Kuching Port (Senari Wharf) — for Kuching, Bau, Serian, Sri Aman, Sibu, Sarikei and surrounding areas. (2) Bintulu Port — for Bintulu, Miri, Limbang, Lawas. We will recommend the port closest to your destination.

What is the difference between shipping to Kuching vs Bintulu?

Kuching: Sarawak's main hub, close to the state capital and the central-southern region. Bintulu: closer to Miri and northern Sarawak. If your destination is Miri, Limbang or Lawas, it is more economical to ship to Bintulu because the land route is shorter (Miri-Bintulu 175km versus Miri-Kuching 790km).

What are the Sarawak Immigration requirements for shipping a car?

Sarawak has its own immigration authority (Sarawak Immigration). FOR THE CAR, no immigration permit is required — because a car is not a visitor. HOWEVER, for the OWNER who is relocating to Sarawak, you may stay up to 90 days with your IC alone. For a longer stay, you need a Social Visit Pass from Sarawak Immigration (which can be applied for at a Sarawak port/airport entry point).

Can I ship a motorcycle to Sarawak?

Yes, motorcycles are accepted for shipping to Sarawak. The cost to ship a motorcycle to Kuching is RM1,250 (the same price as to Sabah). To Bintulu it is RM1,650. All types of motorcycles are accepted — kapchai, street bike, adventure, superbike. Motorcycles are secured with special brackets and covered by marine insurance.

Can I ship a car from Sarawak to Peninsular Malaysia?

Yes, we provide return shipping from Sarawak to Peninsular Malaysia. The cost from Kuching to Port Klang is RM2,110 (sedan), RM1,160 (motorcycle), RM2,310 (commercial). Pickup at Kuching Port or door-to-door from your address in Sarawak.

Which is more suitable for Sarawak, RoRo or Container?

RoRo suits most standard cars to Sarawak — more economical, with a more frequent schedule (twice a week). Container suits luxury or vintage cars, or when you want to pack personal belongings. Container costs ~30-40% more but offers maximum protection and stays locked throughout the voyage.

Can you ship door-to-door to Miri or Bintulu?

Yes, we provide door-to-door delivery throughout Sarawak. From Bintulu Port to Miri (175km, 3-hour drive) or to Limbang (375km, 6 hours). From Kuching Port to Sibu (310km), Sri Aman, or Bau (40km). Contact us for a specific jockey drive cost.

What documents are required to ship a car to Sarawak?

Required documents: (1) A copy of the owner's IC, (2) A copy of the vehicle registration (VOC), (3) A bank release letter if the car is still under loan, (4) The vehicle keys. We handle the JPJ paperwork and Sarawak customs clearance. Sarawak has its own state customs but the process for a private Malaysian car is standard.

Is there any additional tax for shipping a car to Sarawak?

No. For a private car registered with JPJ in Peninsular Malaysia and owned by the same individual, there is NO additional excise tax to enter Sarawak. You only pay the shipping charge to us. Sarawak port tax does not apply to a private inter-state vehicle.

How long does it take to transfer the registration to Sarawak JPJ?

For owners who are relocating and want to change the registration address to Sarawak, the process at JPJ Sarawak (Kuching, Sibu, Miri or Bintulu branch) takes 7-14 working days. Documents: the original registration, an IC with a Sarawak address, and the JPK1 form. The cost is RM50 to print the new registration. The number plate stays the same or can be changed to a 'QA' plate (Kuching), 'QM' (Miri), etc.

Does Sarawak have a car age limit for entry?

There is no specific age limit for a private Malaysian car. As long as the registration is valid and the car is roadworthy, it can be brought into Sarawak. For imports from abroad (e.g. Brunei via Limbang), special customs rules apply.

Can the Pan-Borneo Highway be used for delivery in Sarawak?

Yes, the Pan-Borneo Highway connects Kuching Port and Bintulu Port to all of Sarawak — from Kuching to Lawas. For long-distance delivery (Kuching to Miri 790km, 10-12 hour drive), we recommend a Car Carrier to avoid wear-and-tear. For short routes (under 200km), Jockey Drive is more economical.

What is the sailing schedule for shipping a car to Sarawak?

The sailing schedule to Sarawak: 1-2 times a week from Port Klang to Kuching Port, and 1-2 times a week to Bintulu Port. The schedule is subject to the shipping line and weather conditions. The Sarawak route is more consistent than Sabah's because the sea route is more sheltered.

Is marine insurance included for Sarawak?

Yes, every shipment to Sarawak is covered by All-Risk marine insurance throughout the voyage. The insurance protects against maritime risks such as waves and damage during loading/unloading. For high-value cars (>RM200,000), additional coverage can be arranged at an extra cost.

Can I leave belongings in the car when shipping to Sarawak?

For RoRo, only basic items are allowed (spare tyre, jack, tools). Personal belongings are at your own risk and are NOT covered by insurance. For Container, you can safely pack personal belongings — the container is locked and customs-sealed. Choose Container if you want to ship household items together with your car to Sarawak.

When is the best time to ship a car to Sarawak?

April to September is the calm season — consistent 4-5 day voyages. October to March is Sarawak's rainy season — sailings still operate but may be delayed by 1-2 days. December is peak season (school holidays + New Year) — book 21+ days in advance.
