Sea vs Land

Sea Shipping vs Driving Back Yourself

Many consider driving back themselves via the Pan-Borneo Highway, but there are trade-offs. Compare before you decide.

Factor Sea Shipping (Us) Drive Yourself
Total Cost (Sabah → KL) RM 2,790 (sea + jockey to KL) RM 1,500+ (fuel, tolls, hotel)
Time 7-10 days (you can fly home) 5-7 days driving non-stop
Fatigue / Risk You can fly — no fatigue 2,500 km drive, accident risk
Car Wear & Tear None — the car is on the ship +2,500 km mileage, brakes, tyres
Pan-Borneo Access N/A Must cross Brunei (immigration)
Time Off Work Not needed Need 5-7 days of leave
Can Bring Family Car only, the family flies Family comes along — tiring but an adventure
Weather Risk Ship sails except in major storms Rain and Pan-Borneo floods affect it
Recommendation: Driving yourself suits a family adventure trip. But for a work relocation (tiring, limited time, you need rest), sea shipping is more practical.
Preparation Checklist

Preparing to Ship Your Car Back to Peninsular Malaysia

Besides the standard preparation, there are specific things for a reverse shipment and moving back.

Fuel Tank Maximum 1/4

The same maritime rule applies for the return. Drain it in Sabah/Sarawak before shipping.

Change Registration Address

After moving back, change the registration address to your new Peninsular address at JPJ (7-14 days).

Renew Insurance + Road Tax

Make sure your insurance and road tax are valid before driving in Peninsular Malaysia. You can renew at EzBike/Pos Malaysia.

Service After Arrival

The car sits idle during the 4-7 day voyage. Do an oil change + battery check before any long-distance drive.

360° Photos Before Pickup

Document the car's condition in Sabah/Sarawak before drop-off. Compare it at pickup in Klang.

Change the Number Plate?

The original plate (e.g. SAA, QM) can stay. You can switch to a Peninsular plate (W, BJ, P) at JPJ if you wish — RM50.

RoRo vs Container

Choose Your Return Method

Two main methods to ship your car back — compare price, coverage, and suitability for relocation.

MOST POPULAR

RoRo Ship

Roll-on Roll-off

  • Most economical & affordable price
  • Ships depart every week
  • Fast procedure — suitable for standard cars
  • Cars placed on a covered deck
  • Duration: 4-7 working days
  • Personal belongings not allowed

Container

Exclusive (20ft / 40ft)

  • Maximum protection from weather & dust
  • Car locked inside a steel box
  • Personal belongings can be included
  • Suitable for luxury, vintage & modified cars
  • Duration: 5-10 working days
  • Higher price (Premium)

Door-to-Door

Carrier / Jockey Drive

  • No need to go to the port yourself
  • Picked up from home, delivered to your door
  • Ideal for busy people / out-of-area
  • Choice of Jockey (drive) or Carrier (truck)
  • Duration: +1-3 extra days from port
  • Extra cost RM200-RM900 depending on location

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Prohibited Items Inside the Car

For maritime safety, the port and customs authorities take the issue of cargo inside vehicles seriously. STRICTLY PROHIBITED to carry flammable items, weapons, drugs, or smuggled goods.

For RoRo use, any personal belongings (clothes, boxes, tools) are at the owner's own risk and marine insurance coverage does NOT cover the loss of such items.

*Only the spare tyre, jack, and basic vehicle tools are officially allowed.

Return Shipping
Process

From pickup in Sabah/Sarawak to the car arriving at your home in Peninsular Malaysia — we handle every step, including the Klang customs documents and the jockey drive to all 11 states.

Book a Return Slot

Contact our customer service officer via WhatsApp or call. Provide basic details: car model, origin location, and delivery destination. We will give free advice on the best method (RoRo or Container).

You will receive a transparent official quote. No hidden costs. This quotation covers sea freight, port charges, marine insurance (optional), and handling fees.

Once you agree on the price, we will open a booking file. Ship slots are very limited, so we recommend booking at least 2 weeks before your desired sailing date.

You need to submit copies of important documents: Owner's IC, Vehicle Registration (VOC) JPJ, and a Bank Authorisation Letter (if the vehicle is still under a loan). Documents can be sent as softcopy first.

For 'Hire Purchase' vehicles, you must obtain a release letter from your bank branch. We can provide a sample letter to ease your dealings at the bank counter.

Send your vehicle to our Yard at Port Klang (Westport/Northport). If you are busy, we provide a 'Door-to-Door' service with an additional charge to collect the car from your home.

Before entering the port area, a 'Joint Inspection' will be carried out. We will photograph the car's exterior condition, rims, mirrors, and accessories for a shared security record.

The car will be placed in a secure storage area (Holding Area) within the port while waiting for the ship to arrive. This area is tightly guarded by the port auxiliary police.

Professional port drivers (Stevedores) will drive your car into the ship's hold (RoRo) and secure the tyres (lashing) to ensure the car does not move during the voyage.

The ship departs from Port Klang heading to Borneo. The journey takes an average of 7 to 14 days depending on sea weather conditions and the ship's port-of-call schedule.

The ship arrives at the port (Kota Kinabalu/Kuching/etc). The car is driven out and placed at the destination yard. This process involves verification of port customs data.

Our agent at the destination will handle the release documents (Release Order). All destination terminal charges are settled by us (if included in the package).

You will be contacted to collect the car. Please bring your original IC and driving licence. Inspect your vehicle before signing the receipt form. Done!

Return FAQs

Common Questions Shipping Back to Peninsular Malaysia

Answers to popular questions about shipping back from Borneo.

Is there a difference between 'car shipping' and 'car posting' to Peninsular Malaysia?

There's no difference — 'car shipping', 'car posting' and 'car cargo' all refer to the same service: returning a vehicle from Sabah or Sarawak to Peninsular Malaysia by RoRo or container ship to Port Klang. We handle car shipping from Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and across Borneo to KL, Johor Bahru, Penang and all 11 Peninsular states, door-to-door with full marine insurance.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Sabah to Peninsular Malaysia?

The cost to ship a car from Sabah (KK) to Peninsular Malaysia (Port Klang) starts at RM2,540 for a sedan, RM1,160 for a motorcycle, and RM2,640 for a commercial vehicle. Then add the jockey drive charge from Port Klang to your address in Peninsular Malaysia (RM250 for KL, RM550 for JB/Penang/Kuantan).

How much does it cost to ship a car from Sarawak to Peninsular Malaysia?

The cost to ship a car from Sarawak (Kuching) to Peninsular Malaysia (Port Klang) starts at RM2,110 for a sedan, RM1,160 for a motorcycle, and RM2,310 for a commercial vehicle. Sarawak is cheaper than Sabah because the distance is shorter. The total with jockey drive depends on your destination state.

How many days does delivery take from Borneo to Peninsular Malaysia?

Timeline: 4-6 days sailing (KK/Kuching to Port Klang) + 1-2 days customs clearance + jockey drive time to the address. A total of 6-10 working days from pickup in Borneo to arrival at your Peninsular address. Sarawak (Kuching) is usually 1 day faster than Sabah.

How do I ship a car back from Sabah to my hometown in Peninsular Malaysia?

The process: (1) WhatsApp us for a quote and timeline. (2) Our agent in Sabah collects the car from your address, or you drop it at the yard. (3) The car is loaded onto the ship at Sepanggar Port. (4) A 4-7 day voyage to Port Klang. (5) Customs clearance in Klang. (6) Jockey drive or car carrier to your state address in Peninsular Malaysia.

Can you ship a car directly from Borneo to my state address (e.g. Penang, JB, Kuantan)?

Yes, we provide an end-to-end door-to-door service. The car is collected in Sabah/Sarawak, shipped to Port Klang, then jockey-driven or car-carried to your address across all 11 Peninsular states + KL + Putrajaya. Additional jockey cost: RM250 (KL), RM450 (Melaka), RM550 (JB/Penang/Kuantan), RM600 (Terengganu/Kelantan/Kedah).

What documents are needed to ship a car from Borneo to Peninsular Malaysia?

Same as shipping to Borneo: (1) owner's IC, (2) vehicle registration card (VOC), (3) bank release letter if the car is under a loan, (4) car keys. No Sarawak/Sabah immigration documents are required for the car (because the car is actually 'returning' to its place of origin). We handle JPJ + Klang customs.

I'm moving back to Peninsular Malaysia — do I need to change the registration to my new address?

Yes, if you relocate back to Peninsular Malaysia after a posting/move, you need to change the address on the registration card at a Peninsular JPJ. The process at any Peninsular JPJ takes 7-14 days. Bring the original registration card, your new IC (Peninsular address), and the JPK1 form. The cost is RM50. The number plate stays the same, or you can switch to a new state plate.

Can you ship a car from Bintulu or Miri to Peninsular Malaysia?

Yes. For Miri/Limbang/Lawas, we'll arrange pickup to Bintulu Port (by road), then a Bintulu → Port Klang voyage. Total time is 7-10 days. The cost is slightly higher than Kuching → Port Klang because of the additional land-transport leg. WhatsApp us for an accurate quote.

When is the best time to ship a car back to Peninsular Malaysia?

April-September is the calm season — the most consistent. December is peak season (school holidays, balik kampung) — slots fill up fast, so book 21+ days ahead. For a work relocation, plan 2-3 weeks ahead so the car arrives before you start work in Peninsular Malaysia.

Can I leave belongings inside the car from Sabah/Sarawak to Peninsular Malaysia?

For RoRo, only basic items (spare tyre, tools). Personal belongings are at your own risk and are NOT covered by insurance. For a container, you may load household items — ideal for those relocating back to Peninsular Malaysia with household goods. The container is locked and customs-sealed.

How much is the jockey drive from Port Klang to each state?

Estimated jockey drive costs from Port Klang: KL/PJ RM250, Putrajaya RM300, Seremban RM400, Melaka RM450, Ipoh RM500, JB RM550, Penang RM550, Kuantan RM550, Kuala Terengganu RM600, Kota Bharu RM600, Alor Setar RM600, Kangar RM600. Add this to the shipping charge for your total cost.

Pickup at Port Klang — where is the yard located?

Our yard is at Persiaran Raja Muda Musa, 41100 Klang, Selangor (5 km from Port Klang). After the car arrives from Borneo and clears customs, it is moved to the yard for pickup. You can collect it yourself (bring your IC + a copy of the registration card) or we can deliver it to your address.

Is marine insurance available for the return voyage?

Yes, All-Risk marine insurance is provided for ALL voyages, including the return from Sabah/Sarawak to Peninsular Malaysia. Coverage applies throughout the 4-7 day voyage. For high-value cars (>RM200,000), additional coverage can be arranged.

Can I ship more than one car at the same time from Borneo?

Yes, we offer discounts for multiple-vehicle shipping. For a family relocating back with 2-3 cars + a motorcycle, we arrange one booking, one pickup, one delivery. Contact us for corporate / multi-vehicle rates.

What's the main difference between shipping BACK to Peninsular Malaysia vs shipping to Borneo?

The process is technically the same (RoRo/container ship, customs, jockey). The differences: (1) The origin port is Sepanggar (Sabah) or Kuching/Bintulu (Sarawak), not Port Klang. (2) Pickup in Borneo requires our agent to come to your address in Sabah/Sarawak. (3) After arriving in Klang, delivery can go to ANY Peninsular state — more destination options.

I want to sell my car in Peninsular Malaysia after shipping — is that possible?

Yes. Many of our customers ship cars from Borneo to sell in Peninsular Malaysia (a bigger market, higher prices, especially for SUVs/MPVs). Once the car arrives at Port Klang, you can list it on Mudah/Carlist/at a showroom. Make sure the registration is valid and there's no outstanding loan. We can store it at the yard for 1-2 weeks while you wait for a buyer.
