Buying a Car in Peninsular Malaysia and Shipping It to Sabah — A Complete Guide

Want to buy an affordable car in Peninsular Malaysia and ship it to Sabah? Learn the full process from choosing the car to delivery at your doorstep.

Living in Sabah but interested in a car being sold in Peninsular Malaysia? You are not alone. Many Sabah residents buy used and new cars in Peninsular Malaysia because there is more choice and more competitive prices compared with the local market.

At Hantar Kereta Trading, we regularly help customers from Sabah who buy cars in KL, Johor, Penang and other states — then ship those vehicles directly to Sabah. In this guide, we will explain the entire process from finding the car, remote inspection, payment and transfer documents, right up to the car arriving at your doorstep in Sabah.

1. Why Buy a Car in Peninsular Malaysia?

The used-car market in Peninsular Malaysia is far larger than in Sabah. Here are the main reasons many Sabah residents choose to buy cars from Peninsular Malaysia:

  • More choice — Platforms such as Mudah.my, Carlist.my and Carsome have thousands of car listings from dealers in Peninsular Malaysia. In Sabah, choices are limited, especially for certain models.
  • Lower prices — For the same model, prices in Peninsular Malaysia are usually lower because supply is greater. Compare the price of the model you want yourself on Mudah.my (Peninsular Malaysia) against listings in Sabah — if the price difference exceeds the total shipping cost (see the cost breakdown below), only then is it worthwhile. Don't assume you'll save without accounting for the real cost.
  • Reconditioned cars from Japan — Most reconditioned (recond) cars imported from Japan enter through ports in Peninsular Malaysia. If you want a reconditioned car, buying from a dealer in KL or Johor is the logical choice.
  • New cars without the wait — For popular models that have a waiting list in Sabah, you may be able to get them sooner from a dealer in Peninsular Malaysia.

2. Find & Choose a Car

The first step is to find a suitable car. Here are the platforms and tips for buying a car remotely:

  • Mudah.my — The largest platform in Malaysia for buying and selling used cars. Filter by state, model and budget.
  • Carlist.my / iCar.asia — More cars from registered dealers with more detailed information.
  • Carsome / myTukar — Platforms with quality guarantees and inspections already carried out. Safer for remote purchases.
  • Facebook Marketplace & Groups — Search in groups such as "Kereta Terpakai Malaysia" or groups dedicated to a specific model.

Important tip: Ask the seller to send photos and videos of the car from various angles, including the engine, dashboard (odometer), the underside of the car and any damage. If possible, ask them to take a video while starting the engine so you can hear the engine sound.

3. Remote Inspection

Buying a car without seeing it yourself is indeed risky. Here is how to reduce the risk when buying a car from Peninsular Malaysia:

  1. Check the MYEG/JPJ report — Ask the seller to show the vehicle status report from the JPJ portal. This confirms the car is not stolen, has no outstanding summonses and shows the road tax status.
  2. Use a third-party inspection service — Companies such as AA Malaysia and several large workshops offer vehicle inspection services on behalf of buyers. The cost varies by provider (estimated at around RM 150–300, for example) — confirm the current price with the provider before booking. Worth it for peace of mind.
  3. Video call during the inspection — Ask the seller or your representative to make a video call while inspecting the car. You can see the actual condition live.
  4. Check the service history — Ask for the car's service records. A car serviced regularly at an authorised service centre is usually more reliable.
  5. Use a platform with a guarantee — Carsome and myTukar offer a money-back guarantee if the car is not as advertised.

4. The Payment Process

The payment process for a car bought remotely must be handled carefully:

  • Deposit (10–20%) — Pay a deposit to reserve the car. Make sure there is a written agreement stating the deposit terms and refund conditions if there is a problem.
  • Balance payment — Pay the balance once the inspection is complete and you are satisfied. Use online banking for a clear transaction record.
  • Financing (loan) — If buying by instalment, complete the loan process first. Most banks in Peninsular Malaysia can process a loan even if the applicant is in Sabah.

Warning: Do NOT pay a deposit to a seller who cannot be verified. Make sure you have the seller's IC number, address and a phone number that can be verified. For dealers, check their business licence.

5. Documents & Ownership Transfer

After payment is complete, the ownership transfer process needs to be carried out:

  1. JPJ Form K3 / ownership transfer — The official form to change the registered owner of a vehicle; the seller, as the registered owner, fills in Section A. It can be done at any JPJ branch. See the official steps in the Guide to Voluntary Transfer of Ownership (JPJ). The JPJ ownership transfer fee is RM 100 (confirmed June 2026; subject to change by JPJ).
  2. Puspakom inspection (B5) — Under the Road Transport Act 1987, all private vehicles must undergo a Transfer of Ownership Inspection (now known as the M.V. 15 report, formerly B5) at Puspakom before the name change — not only cars older than 5 years. The inspection fee is RM 30 (plus an RM 3.50 online booking fee; confirmed June 2026). Official details at Puspakom — Transfer of Ownership.
  3. Insurance & road tax — Renew the insurance and road tax under your name before the car is shipped.
  4. Bank release letter — If the car bought is still under the seller's loan, the seller must settle the loan and obtain the release letter. If you take out a new loan, your bank will handle the transfer. Read the full guide in our article on the bank release letter.

The document process can take 3–7 working days. Plan your schedule so the documents are ready before the date the car is shipped to Sabah.

6. Shipping to Sabah

Once the purchase and documents are complete, the next step is to ship the car to Sabah. You have several options:

  • Door-to-Door (Easiest) — The Hantar Kereta Trading team will collect the car from the seller's/dealer's location, bring it to Port Klang and manage the entire process until the car arrives in Sabah.
  • Jockey Drive + Ship — Our jockey driver will collect the car from the seller's location and drive it to Port Klang. From there, the car is shipped by RoRo vessel.
  • Ask the seller to deliver to the port — If the seller agrees to deliver the car to Port Klang, you can save on the jockey cost. We will handle it from the port.

For most cases, the door-to-door service is the easiest option because you don't need to deal with any party in person. We handle everything.

The car is loaded at Port Klang (Westports/Northport) and arrives at Sapangar Bay Container Port, Kota Kinabalu — the main container terminal for Sabah. The shipping time from Peninsular Malaysia to Kota Kinabalu is 5–7 working days. You can track your car's status on our tracking page throughout the process.

7. Total Cost (Breakdown)

Here is an example of the full cost breakdown for buying a used sedan in KL and shipping it to Kota Kinabalu:

Cost ComponentFrom KLFrom JohorFrom Penang
Car Price (example)RM 35,000RM 35,000RM 35,000
Sea Freight (Port-to-Port)RM 2,480RM 2,480RM 2,480
Jockey Drive CostRM 250RM 550RM 550
Marine InsuranceFreeFreeFree
Ownership Transfer (JPJ)~RM 100~RM 100~RM 100

An easy way to know whether it's worthwhile: take the price difference for the same model (Peninsular Malaysia vs Sabah) and subtract the total shipping + document cost from the table above. If the result is positive, that is your real saving. For example, if the car's price difference is RM 6,000 and the full shipping cost is around RM 3,400, you save roughly RM 2,600 — but if the price difference is only RM 2,000, it's better to buy directly in Sabah.

For a more detailed shipping cost breakdown by state, read our article on the cost to ship a car to Sabah. If you are from Johor, we have a dedicated route guide — shipping a car from Johor to Sabah. For other states in Peninsular Malaysia, all routes are handled through our main service, ship a car to Sabah.

For an SUV or MPV, add RM 100–200 to the sea freight. Motorcycles start from RM 450–750. See the full price list on the car shipping cost to Sabah page.

Summary of the Steps

Buying a car in Peninsular Malaysia and shipping it to Sabah can be worthwhile when the price difference exceeds the full shipping cost. Three things determine whether it goes smoothly: a thorough inspection before paying, the ownership transfer documents (JPJ Form K3 + Puspakom inspection) ready before the shipping date, and a carrier that manages the Port Klang → Sapangar Bay route.
