What Is Jockey Drive & When You Need It for Car Shipping

No time to take your car to the port yourself? Our jockey drive service handles it all. Learn the cost, the process and when it's needed.

Jockey drive is one of the two cost components of shipping a car to Sabah and Sarawak (the other component is the RoRo sea transport from Port Klang). Many first-time customers are unsure whether they need this service or can drive to the port themselves — the answer depends on how far your state is from Port Klang and whether you have transport back.

Jockey drive is a service in which a professional driver drives your car from your location to the port, or from the port to your destination address. At Hantar Kereta Trading, the jockey drive service is one of the main components of our door-to-door service that makes things easy for customers across Malaysia.

1. What Is Jockey Drive?

Jockey drive (also known as "jockey service" or "car jockey") is a service in which a professional driver called a "jockey driver" drives your vehicle from one location to another. In the context of shipping a car to Sabah and Sarawak, jockey drive refers to:

  • Pickup jockey — The driver collects the car at your location (home, office, etc.) and drives it to Port Klang to be loaded onto the ship.
  • Delivery jockey — Once the car arrives at the destination port (KK/Kuching), the driver drives the car to the recipient's address.

Jockey drive is the second component in the car shipping cost formula. The complete formula: Sea Cost + Jockey Cost = Door-to-Door Total. Without the jockey service, you'd have to drive the car to the port yourself — which may not be practical, especially if you live far from Port Klang.

To understand the cost formula in more depth, read the article on the cost of shipping a car to Sabah.

2. When Do You Need Jockey Drive?

Not all customers need the jockey drive service. Here are situations where jockey drive is very useful:

  1. You live far from the port — If you're in Johor, Kelantan, Terengganu or other states far from Port Klang, driving to the port yourself means a 4–8 hour journey. Jockey drive saves time and energy.
  2. No transport back — After delivering the car to the port, you need a way to get home. With jockey drive, our driver handles everything.
  3. Shipping a car for the first time — If you're unfamiliar with the process at the port, our experienced jockey driver will handle the documentation and the car handover process. Read the first-time car shipping guide for more information.
  4. You've already moved — Many customers are already in Sabah/Sarawak and ask their family to hand the car to our jockey driver in Peninsular Malaysia.
  5. You need full door-to-door service — For maximum convenience, jockey drive lets you enjoy door-to-door service without having to go to the port yourself.

Tip: If you live in Selangor or KL and can drive to Port Klang yourself, you can save RM 250 by delivering it yourself without using jockey drive.

3. Jockey Drive Cost by State (2026)

4. The Jockey Drive Process at Hantar Kereta Trading

At Hantar Kereta Trading, our jockey drive process is carried out professionally and systematically:

  1. Booking confirmation — After you confirm your booking via WhatsApp or the contact form, we'll set the pickup date and time.
  2. The driver arrives at your location — Our jockey driver will arrive at the agreed location on the promised date and time. He will bring his IC and assignment letter as proof of identity.
  3. Car inspection — Before taking the car, the driver will conduct a visual inspection together with you and take photos of the car's condition from every angle. This is an official record for reference.
  4. Hand over keys & documents — You hand over the car keys and copies of the required documents (registration grant, IC, bank letter if needed).
  5. Jockey to the port — The driver drives your car to Port Klang via the safest route.
  6. Handover to the port team — The car is handed over to our logistics team at the port for the documentation process and loading onto the ship.

5. Safety & Insurance During Jockey Drive

Your car's safety during the jockey drive process is our priority. Here are the protective measures we practise:

  • Validly licensed driver — Every jockey driver holds a valid full driving licence. This is not merely an internal practice: under a standard private car insurance policy, coverage only applies if the driver holds a valid licence for the relevant vehicle class.
  • Insurance on the road — the "authorised driver" concept — While the car is driven to the port, it is still covered by your own vehicle insurance policy (third-party or comprehensive, depending on your policy). This is because a Malaysian private car policy covers an authorised driver — that is, anyone who drives with the owner's permission and holds a valid licence, not just the owner. Refer to the official motor guide from PIAM (the General Insurance Association of Malaysia). Important: if the driver is not a "named driver" in your policy, some policies impose a compulsory excess (typically RM 400) in the event of a claim — check your policy terms before handing over the car.
  • Road tax & insurance must be active — The car must have a valid road tax (LKM) and insurance to be legally driven on the road, and active insurance is indeed a mandatory requirement for road tax. See the road tax requirements on the MyGov portal and JPJ.
  • Photographic inspection record — Photos of the car's condition are taken before the jockey driver departs. This record serves as a reference if you need to compare the car's condition at handover.

Once the car is loaded onto the ship, it is no longer on the road, so coverage shifts to marine (marine cargo) insurance managed by the shipping company. Make sure you confirm the scope and limits of this marine coverage with us before booking. Visit the how to ship a car to Sabah page to understand the entire shipping process.

6. Documents Required

Before handing the car to the jockey driver, make sure you prepare the following documents:

  • Copy of the Vehicle Registration (VOC) — The main document proving vehicle ownership.
  • Copy of the Owner's IC — The identity card of the owner registered on the grant.
  • Bank Release Letter — Required if the car is still under hire purchase financing, because the registered owner on the grant is still the financing bank until the loan is settled. The processing time for this letter varies by bank — check the procedure and processing time directly with your financing bank. Full guide: the bank release letter for car shipping.
  • Car Keys — Provide the main key and a spare key (if available) for a smoother process.
  • Road Tax & Insurance — Make sure the road tax and insurance are still valid and active because the car will be driven on the road.

Note: If you're unsure about the documents required, contact our team via WhatsApp. We'll help guide you step by step. Also read the first-time guide for complete information.

7. Tips Before Handing Your Car to the Jockey

To ensure the jockey drive process runs smoothly, follow these tips:

  1. Remove all personal items — Empty the car of personal belongings, important documents and valuables. RoRo ships do not allow items in the car.
  2. Fill enough fuel — Make sure there's enough fuel for the journey from your location to the port. It doesn't need to be full, 1/4 to 1/2 a tank is enough.
  3. Take photos of the car — Although our driver will make a record, you're also advised to take your own photos from every angle as a personal record.
  4. Make sure the car is in good condition — Check the tyres, battery, engine oil and brakes. The car must be safe to drive to the port.
  5. Remove external accessories — Add-on spoilers, long antennas or easily detachable accessories should be removed to avoid damage during shipping.
  6. Prepare two sets of keys — Give the main key to the driver and keep the spare key as a backup. This is important in case of any problem with the key.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I verify that the jockey driver who comes is legitimate?

Our jockey driver works under Hantar Kereta Trading (SSM 202603144686) and will show their IC and an official assignment letter on arrival. Before handing over the keys, confirm that the driver's name we provided via WhatsApp matches the IC shown, and take photos along with the car's condition as your own record.

Can I save costs by delivering it to the port myself?

Yes. If you live near Port Klang and can arrange your own transport back, you save the jockey cost (RM 250–600 depending on the state). However, you'll need to handle the process at the port yourself.

What happens if the car is damaged during the jockey drive?

On the road, the car is covered by your own vehicle insurance policy under the authorised driver concept (see the PIAM motor guide). We keep a photographic record of the car's condition before departure as a reference. If an incident occurs, contact us immediately so the claim process and responsibility can be coordinated according to the agreed terms — confirm this scope of liability with us in writing before booking.

How long does the jockey drive take from my state to the port?

From KL/Selangor: 1–2 hours. From Johor/Pahang/Kedah: 4–6 hours. From Kelantan/Terengganu/Perlis: 6–8 hours. Our driver usually collects the car in the morning and arrives at the port on the same day. Track the status on the tracking page.

Can someone else hand over the car to the jockey on my behalf?

Yes. Many customers already in Sabah ask family or friends to hand the car to our jockey driver. You just need to prepare the required documents and a letter of authorisation.

For a complete step-by-step guide on shipping a car to Sabah, read our shipping cost breakdown and first-time guide.

Do You Need Jockey Drive or Not?

Choose jockey drive if you live far from Port Klang (Johor, Pahang, the east coast, the north) or have no way home after delivering the car to the port — the cost ranges from RM 250 (KL/Selangor) to RM 600 (Perlis/Kelantan/Terengganu). If you live in the Klang Valley and can arrange your own transport back, delivering it yourself saves the jockey cost, but you'll need to handle the handover process at the port yourself.

Every Hantar Kereta Trading jockey driver holds a valid licence and drives your car under the protection of your car insurance policy (the authorised driver concept), with a photographic record taken before departure. Confirm the driver's details and the scope of coverage with us before handover so everything is clear from the start.
